Compensation:
Surveyor Assistant 1 (Pay Grade 4)
$17.92* – 19.71 – 20.69 – 21.72 – 22.81 – 23.96 per hour

Surveyor Assistant 2 (Pay Grade 6)
$20.70* – 22.77 – 23.91 – 25.11 – 26.36 – 27.69 per hour

Hours of Work:  
The standard hours for this position is 35 hours per work week.  However, during the construction season, the position may require a non-standard 40 hour work week which could include weekends and overtime.

Business Unit Information
Land Information & Mapping is a City of Calgary business unit that supports land development and municipal infrastructure by providing land-related information and mapping services to internal and external customers – critical services in a growing city.

Responsibilities
Successful applicants will be hired at one of the two levels depending on their education and experience, and will be paid accordingly. The Surveyor Assistant 1 and 2 positions work outdoors in typical weather and construction site conditions. Primary duties include:

  • use field survey instruments to make survey observations;
  • assist in reducing survey notes and calculating grades and coordinates;
  • interpret a variety of survey and construction drawings;
  • stake reference points for construction purposes;
  • communicate with surveyors and contractors to complete surveying tasks;
  • work with computers to manage survey data files;
  • stock and maintain supplies in the vehicle;
  • inspect vehicle daily for safety and follow safety rules;
  • other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Surveyor Assistant 1:

High School diploma or equivalency (i.e. GED) plus at least three survey courses (i.e. Survey Calculations and Survey Fieldwork).

Surveyor Assistant 2:
High School diploma or equivalency (i.e. GED) plus at least three survey courses (i.e. Survey Calculations and Survey Fieldwork) and at least one year related survey experience.

Applicants must have a valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License and be able to obtain a City of Calgary driving permit.  Experience with a variety of survey software, total stations and Geodetic Grade GPS would be considered an asset. Experience with Trimble total stations and GPS is preferred.
