Geographic Information Systems Analyst, WWF-Canada (Toronto, ON)


Reports To: Senior Director, Conservation Policy, Planning and Partnership

WWF, the global conservation organization, is actively working in more than 100 countries worldwide, and is a global leader in conservation. WWF-Canada – with headquarters in Toronto and regional offices in Atlantic, Pacific, Alberta, Ottawa and Cuba – has a history of over 40 years of tremendous accomplishment, and is now working on large-scale conservation efforts on Canada’s Grand Banks, the Pacific Coast, the Mackenzie Valley in the north, focusing on Marine, Freshwater, Forestry and Climate Change to name a few areas. It is also the only international environmental organization operating in Cuba. This is an incredibly exciting period of innovation and growth at WWF-Canada.

WWF-Canada is looking for an enthusiastic, creative, professional individual to investigate and complete GIS-related work projects, including research, data analysis and mapping, in support of WWF’s ambitious conservation goals. The individual should be passionate about conservation, have strong GIS skills, and a broad based background relating to conservation / environment. Project work will span WWF-Canada’s efforts in the Arctic, high conservation value assessments in the boreal, species granting work, as well as other efforts in the Pacific, Cuba, education, business engagements and work with partner organizations. This is an entry-level position with opportunities for growth.

Responsibilities include:
  • Employing / improving upon conservation science methods used by WWF and partners.
  • Liaising with other conservation science staff at WWF and partner organizations.
  • Developing and implementing decision-support tools to build external capacity.
  • Developing spatial planning outputs for lobbying and educational purposes.
  • Developing and advising on cartographic and related communications products.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of conservation science information data.
Formal qualifications, knowledge, experience:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a conservation field (e.g. ecology, biology, geography).
  • GIS / Information Management expertise gained through a GIS diploma/degree or equivalent experience.
Skills and abilities required:
  • A passion to work for WWF, the global conservation organization.
  • Solid communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong cartographic and data visualization skills.
  • Ability to work on many and varied projects.
  • Ability to work independently.
