The New Brunswick Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport in Fredericton, is seeking a Provincial Archaeologist.
DUTIES : Reporting to the Director of Heritage Branch, the Provincial Archaeologist is accountable for the provincial responsibilities in cultural resource management of New Brunswick’s 11,000 years of archaeological heritage. He/she will advise all levels of government, industry, First Nations, and individuals on the preservation, management, and development of these heritage resources for the benefit of present and future generations. This includes a proactive policy that strives to facilitate solutions to resource conflicts by integrating preservation concerns with development. He/she will manage the Archaeological Services Unit including: management of permanent, casual and contract employees; management of the annual budget of the unit and securing additional resources; fostering research; as well as undertaking specific projects. He/she will represent the Department on interdepartmental and intergovernmental committees and initiatives.
Principal areas of work include: policy and strategic development; First Nations heritage; resource management and conservation including the administration of the Historic Sites Protection Act and the regulatory processes set out by this act and the Environmental Impact Assessment process; and management of the provincial archaeological collection and database.
As Provincial Archaeologist, he/she will be required to present positions, and/or opinions, develop value for archaeology, and formally communicate to a variety of forums, public hearings, conferences, workshops, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must hold a university degree at the Masters level with a minimum of one degree in archaeology with specialty in cultural resource management. They must also have a minimum of five (5) years experience working at a senior level on heritage conservation issues, administration, project implementation, and involvement with First Nations issues, and to include a minimum of one (1) year of direct management and supervisory experience. The successful candidate will have knowledge of archaeological practices, cultural history in northeast North America/eastern Canada; knowledge of governments and how they operate. The successful applicant will also have experience in project planning, information technology and geographic information systems skills. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Written and spoken competence in English and spoken competence in French are required.
The successful applicant must have demonstrated strong management, leadership, organizational judgment and decision making abilities as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Travel in the province is required as well as occasional evening and weekend work.
