JOB SUMMARY:

The Office of Surface Mining is a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior with responsibility in cooperation with the states and Indian Tribes, to protect citizens and the environment during mining and reclamation, and to reclaim mines abandoned before 1977.

MAJOR DUTIES:

This position is located at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas in the Office of Indian Education Programs.  This position is a grant funded position for up to four years.  The incumbent of this position is responsible for the teaching responsibilities that include teaching one (1) to two (2) courses per semester to include: Advanced Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Applications of GIS in the natural and social sciences, Introductory remote sensing, map reading and analysis, or introductory cartography.   The incumbent is responsible for directing and guiding GIS projects for independent study students; advise and assist students in finding GIS internships; oversees and collaborates with the CReSIS Graduate Research Assistant; develops funding sources to support the lab and the position; provide GIS support and training for the HINU community and develop and offer GIS workshops and training sessions for HINU faculty and staff.  The purpose of this work is to develop a GIS program that will benefit the students and support the tribes.  Incumbent is responsible in working towards funding to support the position after the NSF/TCUP grant funding is over.  Incumbent must have knowledge of ESRI GIS software and evidence of effective teaching at a university or college level with demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to adapt to new situations.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:  Basic Requirements: A) Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position OR B) combination of education and experience—courses equivalent to a major of education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in A above. In ADDITION to meeting the Basic Requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education. This position requires three (3) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (transcripts required) OR one (1) year of Specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level.

Specialized Experience may include but not limited to research and/or teaching experience in cartography, remote sensing, and/or GPS Global Position System (GPS) desirable at a college or university level; developed funding sources; provided GIS workshops and training sessions; developed pertinent GIS or cartography publications; utilized GIS software.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:

1)      One (1) Full Time Seasonal Contingent Position.  Appointment is subject to termination at any time.

Seasonal Position:  Per annum salary will vary based on the number of weeks in pay status.  Incumbent will be placed in non-pay status for a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks per calendar year.  Contingent Position:  A Contingent position is a temporary position contingent upon grant funding.

2)      All new hires are automatically covered by Haskell Indian Nations University Demonstration Project under the Higher Education Workforce Project, P.L. 105-337, of October 31, 1998.

3)      This is a Moderate Risk, Public Trust Position.  A favorable background investigation is required prior to appointment.

4)      You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.
