GIS Assistant – South Nation Conservation


Position Summary:

SNC requires a highly organized individual to assist with digitizing data. This individual will work within the Fisheries, Water Quality and Information Management Departments to assist with providing GIS versioned data for the needs of watershed characterization, fisheries sampling and monitoring. This GIS Technician will be enrolled in or have completed a certificate, diploma or undergraduate degree program that includes instruction in the use and maintenance of GIS datasets. Candidates with post secondary training in the physical sciences (Geography, Geology, Environmental Sciences, etc.) who have undertaken GIS course work in their program will be considered for this position.

Duties / Responsibilities:

1. Assist in the creation, editing and maintenance of GIS spatial and attribute data, as directed.

2. Create versioned backups of projects in progress and those completed.

3. Maintain records of the steps and methods used in the creation and editing of data.

4. Report any irregularities or errors encountered during the editing of datasets to the GIS Specialist.

5. Prepare summary reports that incorporate GIS in the form of mapping, tables and text for analytical purposes, as directed.

6. Other related duties as required.

7. All duties must be performed in accordance with SNC Safety Policy and Procedures, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

Requirements:

• Possess a working knowledge of GIS software (e.g.: ESRI’s ArcGIS suite of software, ArcMap, ArcCatalog)

• Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office).

• Good report writing, research and analytical skills

• Communicate effectively with GIS team members and other staff on GIS technical issues.

• Possess a general knowledge of the use of GIS related to drainage basins, conservation and natural resources.

• Capable of supervised, independent and team work.

Health And Safety:

The incumbent shall:

· Work in compliance with the provisions of the Ontario Health and Safety Act and regulations; in addition to the Personnel Policies which all SNC staff must observe;

· Use the equipment, protection devices or clothing that the worker’s employer requires to be used or worn;

· Report to his or her employer or supervisor the absence of, or defect in any equipment or protective device of which the worker is aware and which may endanger himself, herself or another worker; and

· Report to his or her employer or supervisor any contravention of the Health and Safety Act or the regulations of the existence of any hazard of which he or she knows.

Rate of Pay: $8.00 / hour
