JOB SUMMARY: To provide support as the Global Information Systems (GIS) coordinator with the Metis Nation of British Columbia (MNBC) Historical Document Database project and related projects. Major responsibilities include: managing the GIS related aspects of the Metis Historical Document database (MHDD) and translating this data into a graphic form; collaborating and managing data from the MHDD and related programs; acting as liaison with Supervisor, MNBC and Metis community members and organizations; developing training manuals; interacting with Metis people in BC; managing assistants (i.e. graduate and undergraduate students and researchers); writing papers, research reports and journal articles; organizing and conducting workshops; recruiting and managing participant membership in the MHDD from BC Metis peoples; participating in investigator team meetings; checking survey data; auditing data; supporting the investigative team; providing training and mentorship; and performing other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: Undergraduate degree (MA degree preferred) in social sciences such as History, Indigenous Studies, Anthropology, Human Geography and Geography, and a minimum of two years related experience with research projects, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Management experience preferred. Detail oriented, tactful, diplomatic, orderly, organized and able to prioritize. Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are required, as well as strategic and tactical planning abilities. Able to multi-task and attention to detail. Able to exercise initiative and deal with a high volume workload. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment. Knowledge of web-based databases, GIS applications, and strong word processing skills. Familiarity with Metis culture and history preferred.
