This is a bargaining unit position restricted to current civil service employees represented by Nova Scotia Government Employees Union. Duties:
Under the direction of the Topographic Mapping Coordinator, the duties of the Drafting and Illustration Technician are as follows: from the Geomatics Centre in Amherst, performs quality control inspections on work submitted by geomatics contractors to ensure and maintain the quality and completeness of the Nova Scotia Topographic Database (NSTDB). Performs file management and data conversion, and creates professional quality indices and cartographic products using ArcGis software. Expected to assist in the development of quality control procedures and have a thorough knowledge of NSTBD specifications. The Drafting and Illustration Technician is a team member who must be prepared to perform other production or data management duties as required. Experience with GIS, cartography, photogrammetry, orthophotomapping, image processing, and enhancements of digital aerial photography is considered an asset.
Qualifications:
Grade XII plus graduation from a recognized technical college with a diploma in one of the Geomatics Sciences or equivalent training and experience. Preference will be given to candidates with at least two years of experience in a Geomatics work environment.
Knowledge and experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related database applications is required as well as sound knowledge of Windows XP/Professional operating systems, GIS technologies and software including:
- GIS – ArcGis/ArcInfo, MapInfo, other GIS applications
- Word Processing – WordPerfect, MS Word
- Database Software – MS Access, Oracle
Familiarity with programming concepts and quality assurance are desired. Effective interpersonal, good organizational, and communication skills are required. The ability to exercise sound judgment, to work independently in a multifaceted environment, to adapt to new methodologies and software applications, to work in a team environment, and interact with outside organizations and the general public in a professional manner are necessary. Occasional travel throughout the Province is required within this work environment, along with a valid driver’s license. Attention to detail and good time management skills are essential.

Classification Range: TE11 – TE19
Salary Range: $28,130 – $43,201
