Location: Regional Ecosystem Management Division, Labrador Region, Department of Natural Resources.
Job Type: TEMPORARY – (1 position – Port Hope Simpson; 1 position – Happy Valley/Goose Bay)
Duties: Under the general direction of a more senior Conservation Officer or professional, monitors silviculture operations, cone collection and other areas to ensure adherence to Provincial Silviculture Standards or contract specifications. Supervises temporary employees as required. Determines quality of contract work on Crown and Company silviculture operations, re-measures permanent and temporary sample plots, carries out regeneration surveys, undertakes traversing, correcting and mapping silviculture operations using GPS based technology, interprets aerial photographs and transcribes data to maps, compiles and transcribes data using computer technology to update maps relating to silviculture operations. Checks areas for silviculture requirements such as cone collection sites and plus tree potential. Conducts technical field work, data compilation and analysis and report preparation in relation to adaptive ecosystem management and ecosystem health projects. Assists in compliance and forest fire related functions under the general supervision of a more senior Conservation Officer. Performs other related duties.
Qualifications: Knowledge of ecosystem management programs, silviculture operations, compliance and enforcement procedures, forest fire suppression control, education and training program development and micro software applications. Candidates must be able to work independently and possess initiative, together with organizational, supervisory, interpersonal, report writing, and oral and written communication skills. These qualifications would normally be acquired through the completion of a recognized two-year technical course in a Natural Resource Management discipline and related experience. Valid class 5 Newfoundland and Labrador drivers licence.
Salary: $35,908.60 – $39,894.40 (GS-30) (plus Labrador Benefits $5,200. with dependents, $2,600 without dependents)
