Opportunity:
Ministry of Environment, Environmental Stewardship Division, Fish and Wildlife Section, Penticton – The Okanagan regional Resource Information Specialist acts as technical authority for inventory and information management projects and provides expertise on the collection, capture and application of resource information, including data limitations and risks. The position is key to regional project delivery, and to ensuring the efficient management of fish, wildlife, habitat and ecosystems information in to and out of corporate systems.

The Resource Information Specialist reports through the regional Fish and Wildlife Section Head, and services the provincial and regional needs of Fish and Wildlife, Ecosystems and Parks and Protected Areas components of the Environmental Stewardship Division. The specialist acts as the point of contact to a provincial team of resource information specialists for matters related to fish, wildlife and ecosystems information, and as the technical authority for specific subject area information related to fish, wildlife, habitat and ecosystems. The Resource Information Specialist provides services covering:

  • provincial responsibilities to ensure the effective functioning of the corporate inventory/information system;
  • cross regional delivery to ensure all regions benefit from general and specialty fish, wildlife, habitat and ecosystems services;
  • local responsibilities covering the needs of fish, wildlife and ecosystems regional operations;
  • The specialist must maintain close working relationship within the division to ensure a collaborative approach to the delivery of resource information interests related to ecosystem information.

Qualifications:
Masters Degree in fish or wildlife biology with at least three years directly related experience, as described below, OR Bachelors Degree in fish or wildlife biology with at least five years directly related experience, as described below, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicants also must have membership or immediate eligibility for membership as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the College of Applied Biology. Experience is required in fish and/or wildlife inventory for the purpose of documenting distribution and quantifying abundance; mapping habitats in meaningful units and in interpreting their relative quality for use by various fish and wildlife species; management of digital fish or wildlife and habitat information and the use of analytical tools, including GIS for portraying and interpreting the information; application of fish or wildlife and habitat information in land use or management initiatives; and considerable demonstrated experience in dealing with public and private sector officials, professionals, contractors, and interest groups with conflicting interests and expectations.
