This is a term position with an anticipated end date of March 31, 2008. This is a bargaining unit position restricted to current civil service employees represented by Nova Scotia Government Employees Union. Duties:
Reporting to the Director of Policy, Planning & Research, the Drafting & Illustration Technician provides demographic analysis and related mapping support services to assist with social services program and delivery planning for a variety of departmental programs. The work of the Drafting and Illustration Technician supports the data warehousing of existing mapping products and supporting databases. Using GIS software, the Drafting & Illustration Technician generates new digital and hard copy cartographic products for internal clients by querying, manipulating, extracting and interpreting geographic data contained within a variety of different departmental administrative databases and/or from external data sources like Statistics Canada.
Qualifications:
Gr. 12 plus approved course in drafting or graphics. Preference will be given to applicants with related experience. The successful candidate must have the following: a detailed knowledge of GIS software, colour thematic mapping production processes and/or cartographic mapping; experience with design software including Corel Graphics Suite and Adobe Acrobat as well as with relational database programs such as Oracle, Microsoft Access, MS Excel, and Dbase. Proficiency with Windows, PC applications, digitizers, scanners, printers, plotters, and file transfer technology. The ability to work cooperatively, with tact, sensitivity and a high degree of confidentiality, to interpret /analyze and develop solutions to meet client needs is essential. An ability to manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines as well as good verbal and written skills for internal communications is required. Good understanding of the legislative framework, programs, services, and delivery structure of the Department of Community Services, and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPOP) Act would be considered assets.

Classification Range: TE11-19
Salary Range: $28,130 – $43,201
