Reporting to the Manager Vegetation Load, the Spatial Data Specialist position functions in a dynamic environment meeting diverse client needs for customized information products and services. Spatial data and related information products are utilized in operational and strategic planning and decision-making at many levels and must be produced in a timely, accurate and repeatable manner to meet production schedules and client expectations. Business requirements and the tools to manage and analyze spatial data are constantly changing and will require the continual review of corporate spatial data standards and new tools.

The Spatial Data Specialist provides expert technical and analytical support, advice and services to FAIB and its internal and external clients on all aspects of spatial data management and its application in resource analysis. This position contributes to building the capabilities of ministry staff to maximize the potential of GIS and related geospatial and information technologies through the development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of standards,procedures and methods for collection, integration, maintenance,analysis, storage and distribution of digital corporate data.Responsibilities include supporting staff with complex analysis projects involving spatial data, preparation of spatial datasets for application in timber supply analysis, validating, reconfiguring,documenting and archiving standard inventory and analysis products,developing systems and supporting data for distribution of standard data products. Developing data management plans and standards for various corporate spatial data products. Outcomes are utilized for the development of scientifically based policy, standards and guidelines for forest and range management, and informed strategic planning and decision-making regarding forest management activities. The position also represents the section on related committees and working groups.

The incumbent uses their knowledge and judgement of spatial data, and analysis techniques to develop methodologies for (and carry out)complex data analyses that contribute to Allowable Annual Cut (AAC)determinations made by the Ministry of Forests and Range (MOFR). The position supports emerging policies and technology, digital data integration and collaboration in GIS and other geospatial approaches;ensures compliance with established standards and procedures; and facilitates continuous improvement of the resource information knowledge base.

In addition to your university or technical college degree or diploma specializing in geomatics or computer science you have at least 5 years of direct working experience in the application of GIS to resource analysis (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). You also have direct experience manipulating, integrating and analyzing geographical data using ESRI ArcINFO/GIS and Relational Database Management Systems such as Oracle , POSTGRESQL, MYSQL.Demonstrated experience programming with Structured Query Language(SQL) and AML (Arc Macro Language) or PYTHON to script automated geo-processing.

Preferred experience would include:
– Programming languages such as C, C++, C#, PERL, PYTHON, JAVA
– Use of Vegetation Resources Inventory (VRI) or other forest inventories
– Remote sensing, image analysis tools and other geospatial techniques
