Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, Sidney, B.C.
Type of Position: Full time 16 weeks
Start Date: Approximately May 3, 2007
End Date: August 22, 2007
Pay Rate: $14.02 to $16.07 per hour
(Student positions are paid according to level of education salary range)
Qualifications and Skills:

First Year Masters with GIS specialization, or 3 or 4 year undergraduate in Geography, Ecology, Forestry, or Environmental Sciences and GIS skills or Certificate/diploma in Geographic Information Systems an asset.

Experience using ESRI suite of GIS software (ArcGIS 9.x)(code1812)

GIS technical knowledge (codes 1823, 1822)

Some experience in handling ecological and environmental GIS data sets is preferable

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing (codes 5026)

Ability to prepare written reports with recommendations

Initiative, ability to self start, work independently and collaboration with a team

It would be an asset if this individual has experience in cultural sensitivity or knowledge of Aboriginal Culture/Traditions i.e. Coast Salish Nation (code 5308)
Job Description:
The Geomatics Technician, based at Gulf Islands National Park Reserve will study and build on a predictive modelling approach for Traditional Use Sites for the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve (GINPR) and the Coast Salish Nations. This will involve examining various ecological mapping layers developed by the GINPR and determining how best can these be integrated with the Traditional Use predictive modelling software.
Geomatics Technician will also:

help in managing spatial and non-spatial databases in support of resource conservation and park management

provide Geomatics analytical support including manipulation and analysis of spatial and non-spatial data to other park staff and managers
