English essential

Education

Successful completion of Diploma in Technology or University/College degree from a recognized institution with a specialization in Surveying, Cartography, Geomatics, Geomatics Engineering, Geography, or a related discipline.

Experience

Experience with computers, Windows operating systems and MS Office programs

Experience with at least one of the three disciplines: Geographic Information Systems, hydrographic surveying or cartography.

Experience in field and office work environments.

Other Merit Criteria and Conditions of Employment

  • Security Clearance: Reliability Status
  • Occupational Health – Hydrographer medical category required.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Work may involve travel anywhere in Canada, by car, truck, ship, launch, helicopter or small plane and may entail work at sea and in the field.
  • Work may involve overtime, working on weekends and shift work. Work may involve working away from home and/or in isolated areas for extended periods.
  • Work may also involve periods of sustained attention at a computer terminal.

Applicants who meet the above criteria will also be assessed against the Statement of Merit Criteria for this position.

Challenge

The successful candidate may participate in hydrographic surveys, calibrate depth and positioning equipment, assist in the installation of tide gauges, erect survey markers, read and record data from tidal, distance and depth measurement systems. You will need to provide information to validate hydrographic data; locate and archive survey records, field notes, topographic information and perform calculations and computations; Digitize, validate, process and transform hydrographic data and other data, for the creation and maintenance of Canada’s official nautical charts and related products and information; Operate digitizing equipment and software, operate computer assisted editing stations; Participate in hydrographic project teams; Work will be performed following the ISO Quality Management System.
