GIS Technician position – Musqueam Indian Band


Full-time Term position 1 Year

Under the direction of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Manager, this position supports the Treaty, Lands and Resources Department by providing assistance with GPS field inventory, creating technical ‘how-to’ documents, researching historical records for geographic context, editing and maintaining the GIS database, and creating various map products.

Duties:

  • Researches Musqueam traditional territory maps and records using library sources and the Internet
  • Digitizing and translating First Nations maps obtained from various sources
  • Ability to scan and print large map images
  • Editing and maintenance of map and tabular data from the GIS database (knowledge of MS Access and MS Excel is essential)
  • Field work – ability to traverse terrain to collect GPS data
  • Assists in the design, development and creation of databases, maps and other related projects
  • Ability to communicate effectively to educate and train new users of GIS and other database systems
  • Ability to maintain and update metadata associated with the GIS database
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time
  • Desire to learn new software and technologies related to mapping and GIS development
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with employees, associates and the general public
  • Knowledge of graphic design software is beneficial (Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator)

Qualifications:

Skill and knowledge usually attained by successful completion of secondary school and post-secondary programs related to computer databases, library or archival technicians; or an equivalent combination of skill, knowledge, and experience.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge and experience of similar program delivery in the context of Musqueam or First Nations culture and history.
  • Ability to use tact and good judgment in dealing with sensitive and complex issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Well developed analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with related hardware and software.
  • Must be able to contribute to team tasks and work independently when required.

Salary dependent on qualifications and experience.
