Duties:

Under the general supervision of an Area Supervisor or Assistant Area Supervisor, the Forestry Technician implements approved Department projects and policies concerning the development, maintenance, protection, and public education of and about the natural resources of the province within a designated geographical district or activity area. These two positions primary duty will be overseeing the Tobeatic Wilderness Area campsite lease program. This involves working closely with Department of Environment and Labour Wilderness Area staff and campsite lease holders to remove camps and relocate campsite leases to Crown lands outside the Wilderness Area.

Typically a Forestry Technician may be assigned any or all of following responsibilities:

  • Carry out and/or monitor approved projects on Crown lands relating to outdoor recreation, land administration, wildlife habitat and resource management
  • Implement forest fire prevention and pre-suppression programs
  • Conduct public liaison and education duties in support of departmental policies and programs
  • Investigate and respond to a wide variety of requests from the public
  • Supervise the operation, maintenance, and construction of public camping and picnic parks, depots, or other facilities
  • Conducts field investigations, surveys and/or data collections relating to resource management and land administration
  • Prepare a wide variety of reports and returns
  • Participate in work related meetings, courses, committees and conferences
  • Monitors forest insect and disease levels through regular surveys
  • Other related duties as may arise

Qualifications:

Requires successful completion of a two-year Natural Resources Technical Diploma Program (one year Maritime Forest Ranger School graduates will be accepted).  Must be physically fit, as travel is often on foot over rough terrain and to occasionally work for extended periods of time.  May be required to work in remote locations.  Must be computer literate.  Must demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills for preparing and delivering accurate reports, carrying out public liaison duties and supervising staff.  Must express a willingness to learn numerous government acts, regulations, policies, and procedures.  Must be capable of maintaining good rapport with fellow employees and the general public.  Must be willing to work standby and callback, irregularly scheduled hours, and overtime.  Must hold a valid driver’s license and may be required to provide a vehicle to carry out duties. Required to operate department vehicles, off road vehicles, boats and equipment.

Classification Range: TE 13 – 22

Salary Range: $29,767 – $48,920
