You will remain the primary point of contact for the District Stewardship Team and play an integral role in the development of strategies to enhance forest practices
The Stewardship mandate is to promote forest management strategies and practices that ensure the sustainable use of British Columbia’s forests.
The District Stewardship team supports this mandate by assisting with the development of forest management standards and practices.
The team provides decision support related to sustainable timber supply and professional advice to all operational and strategic plans that apply to the working forest.
As the District Stewardship Technician, you will provide support for stewardship operations, the strategic management of forest health issues, as well as playing a key role in the review of development proposals and permit application referrals for the use of Crown land. You will also provide First Nations Liaison services to the district. This will include facilitating their participation in the forest sector along with helping to create related job opportunities.
This work requires effective interpersonal and negotiation skills to collaborate and reach agreement with First Nations. Flexibility and the ability to perform professionally under urgent and/or confidential circumstances are a key attribute as demands and program issues are constantly changing.
You have graduated from an approved technical institute with a diploma in Resource or Forestry Management with three years of current (gained in last five years) experience in Silviculture, Forest Health, Harvesting and/or Integrated Resource Management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience such as five years of operational forestry experience.
Recommended/Preferred Certification is as follows:
– Pesticide Applicator’s Licence
– Wildlife/Danger Tree Assessment Courses
– Silviculture Surveyor Accreditation
– Must hold and maintain a valid BC Driver’s Licence.
– Must be in excellent physical condition to conduct field activities.
Requires strong self-management, thinking capability and social awareness skills. Emphasis will be placed on the following competencies: Self Management, including flexibility, initiative, results orientation and self confidence; Social Awareness, including conflict management, listening, understanding and responding, and teamwork and co-operation; Thinking Capabilities, including problem solving and planning, organizing and co-ordinating.
