One of Canada’s premier centres for the study and creation of visual art, York’s Visual Arts Department offers comprehensive programs of study in Art History and Studio Art, leading to the BA, BA Honours, BFA Honours, MA and MFA degrees. Studies courses span a wide range of visual cultures and traditions, including western and non-western art history, art criticism, theory and policy, and material and theme-based studies. Research resources include an outstanding collection of contemporary art by Canadian and international artists, a large visual image library, and the extensive art history holdings and visual arts archives of the York University Libraries. The Studio Art program encompasses intensive professional training in state-of-the-art facilities in all media: painting; drawing; photography; sculpture; print media; digital media; time-based arts.
Art History
Applications are invited for a tenure-track position at theAssistant Professor level in Art History, specifically Aboriginal Artin North America. The emphasis of this position is current practices inthe field. The successful applicant will have a strong, provencommitment to research and scholarly publication. Applicants must alsohave the capacity to teach Aboriginal (First Nations or Inuit) art atall levels of the undergraduate and graduate programs. An ability tobridge art historical and broader cultural discourses (Aboriginal andnon-Aboriginal) is required. This capacity will be demonstrated throughat least one year of university-level teaching and a record of successin that endeavour. The position will entail graduate supervision in theMA Art History Program and in the PhD program (OGS approval pending).The successful applicant will also be required to undertakeadministrative responsibilities in the undergraduate and graduateprograms. A PhD or advanced ABD in a relevant field is required.Applicants with demonstrated interdisciplinary and global interests areencouraged to apply. The successful candidate should be suitable forprompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
