What is GIS for Resource Management?
Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) uses modern technology to automate, integrate, analyze, and communicate spatially-based information.
This certificate program is designed to meet the requirements of natural resource industries, the public sector, and First Nation organizations for skilled technicians in this exciting and rapidly growing field.
Students gain working knowledge and competency through a hands-on approach to GIS and related technologies including:
- Photogrammetry
- Global Positioning Systems
- Remote Sensing
- Computer Programming
- Database design in the context of resource management projects
Graduates may find employment in various natural resource managementagencies as entry level GIS Technicians. Information Technologies are applied in:
- Fisheries
- Forestry
- Wildlife
- Parks
Innovative Delivery
The GIS certificate program delivery model is based on the principle of building understanding of general GIS concepts by applying them in hands-on exercises and projects using current software. Thus, class time is balanced between periods of instruction, demonstration, lab exercises and project work. Students are expected to attend daily classes Monday to Friday. Additional lab access time is provided as needed.
Students undertake field excursions to observe the role of GIS in various resource management agencies. These include trips to the satellite receiving station in Prince Albert, and to resource management agenciesin Saskatoon and Regina.
The program schedule consists of a sequence of courses of several days to weeks in length, introducing different GIS related topics. When space permits, courses may also be taken individually by extension students. The certificate program culminates with a work placement practicum.
