Please note this position can be either a BCGEU, Administrative Officer N21 with a biweekly salary from $1825.61 to $2082.65 OR a PEA, Licensed Science Officer 2 with a bi-weekly salary from $1825.86 to $2280.49, based on the successful applicant’s qualifications.

The First Nations/Stewardship Forester (or Technician) provides advice to staff on local First Nations interests, implementation of First Nations consultation policy, and coordinating First Nations consultation to ensure District compliance with respect to legal obligations to First Nations. The position develops and maintains relationships with First Nations, encouraging and coordinating First Nations participation in strategic and operational forest management processes through liaising with people working in band or tribal council offices and with district licensees, facilitating effective communication, managing information and informing district management of developing issues in a timely manner. The position also provides operational support for all Stewardship strategic level planning including, but not limited to, Stewardship Plans, Timber Supply Review, Land and Resource Management Plans.

A forester (LSO) will exercise all of the duties and deliverables described in the job description and practice forestry where the practice of forestry is possible within the range of duties and deliverables of the position and, will be able to direct forestry activities including the work of other forestry professionals. A technician (AO) will exercise all of the duties and deliverables described in the job description except, will be under the direction of a Professional Forester for those duties that imply the practice of forestry and, will not direct the work of professional foresters.

Qualifications: For LSO 2 (forester): University Degree in Forestry or Natural Resource Management and 3 years experience ( preferably gained in the last five years) in a resource management field, preferably forestry or; equivalent combination of education and experience. Registered Professional Forester with the Association of BC Forest Professionals or, eligible for registration as a professional forester. Lesser qualified applicants may be considered for appointment at a lower level. For AO N21 (technician): Graduation from a technical institute with a diploma in Natural Resource or Forest Management, and three years of current (preferably gained in the last five years) directly related experience in a resource management field or; equivalent combination of education and experience. Lesser qualified applicants may be considered for appointment at a lower level.

Preferred Qualifications (both): Demonstrated experience working in First Nations communities on resource management or economic development issues; considerable understanding of First Nations land claims history in British Columbia; Experience and/or training in negotiations or conflict management.
