The Faculty of Environmental Studies (FES) at York University, Toronto,invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Indigenous Environmental Thought to start July 1,2007. We welcome applications from a wide range of disciplines and practices focused on a North American context, and particularly from indigenous people. We are seeking a colleague to complement existing strengths in the area of culture and the environment. Ability to link cultural processes to place, and expertise in indigenous community-sanctioned research methodologies is desirable. Specific expertise in Anishinaabe and/or Haudenasaunee studies would be an asset as well as fluency in a relevant indigenous language. Candidates must hold a PhD degree in a relevant field by the time of appointment or hold equivalent standing in indigenous community and/or cultural traditions.

In the Faculty of Environmental Studies the area of Culture and Environment: Philosophy, Arts, Technology and Education, is defined broadly. The area focuses on the conceptual, historical and cultural roots of environmental issues, and on environmental arts, education, traditional ecological knowledge/indigenous knowledge, policy and cultural organizations as crucial sites of environmental action.

FES is a unique interdisciplinary Faculty that adopts a broad definition of “environmental studies” including natural, built, social and organizational environments and that welcomes diverse perspectives and approaches. The Faculty has both undergraduate and graduate programs, and the candidate must be able to contribute to teaching, advising, and research in both programs.
