Are you interested in gaining work experience with one of North America’s leading wetland and waterfowl research programs?

Summary—Ducks Unlimited Canada’s (DUC) Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research is seeking Research Crew Leaders and Research Technicians to help conduct research on the breeding ecology of scaup and scoters in the Mackenzie Valley, NWT, beginning in April and May 2007. These positions are expected to be three to six month terms, however, there is the possibility of extension for some positions through the fall and winter at DUC’s head office located at Oak Hammock Marsh near Stonewall, Manitoba.

Research staff responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to, capturing and marking female waterfowl, aerial and ground-based telemetry, waterfowl nest searching, waterfowl surveys, brood observations, invertebrate sampling, and habitat identification.

A degree, diploma, completed coursework or relevant work experience in biology, ecology, zoology or a related field is required. Possession of a valid FAC (Firearms Acquisition Certificate) and certification in First Aid will be required by the date of employment. Sensitivity to aboriginal issues, the ability to work in a team environment and demonstrated resourcefulness and initiative are also required.

Previous experience in waterfowl research and skills in wilderness survival, firearms safety, small aircraft and watercraft safety, bear safety, and backcountry camping are considered definite assets. Research conditions will be challenging, therefore, successful candidates must be able to cope with biting insects, difficult terrain, poor weather and spartan living conditions in remote locations.

RESEARCH CREW LEADER (two positions) Positions will begin in April 2007 at DUC’s head office, where research crew leaders will assist with field season preparations. In the field, crew leaders will be required to supervise a crew of up to six technicians.  Familiarity with field research techniques, data collection procedures and computer literacy is required.  Proven leadership, excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as previous experience with waterfowl research are necessary.  The gross salary for this position is $2,500 CDN/month while working in the office.  In the field, food and accommodations will be provided with a gross salary of $3,000 CDN/month. 

RESEARCH TECHNICIAN (six positions) Positions will begin in mid-May 2007. Candidates with a combination of research, waterfowl, or wetland experience and familiarity with the outdoors will be given preference. The gross salary for this position is $2,700 CDN/month. Food and accommodations will be provided.
