CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: The Dr. Andrew Thompson Award
VANCOUVER – West Coast Environmental Law is calling for nominations for the Dr. Andrew Thompson Award.
The award, recognizing excellence in environmental advocacy and protection, was first established in 2004, by West Coast and the Thompson family as a legacy to Dr. Thompson. Andrew Thompson was a pioneer in the fields of environmental and natural resource law, authoring many publications and texts that are still widely referred to today. In addition to teaching at UBC’s law school, where the natural resources law programme is now named in his honour, Dr. Thompson was selected to chair several commissions and inquiries, including the BC Utilities Commission and the West Coast Oil Ports Inquiry. David Anderson, the former federal Minister of the Environment and MP for Victoria, was the first recipient of the Dr. Andrew Thompson Award in 2004. This year, the award will be given in two categories – one to an institutional leader who has significantly contributed to environmental sustainability in British Columbia as a direct result of their professional achievements in law or policy. The second award will be given to a community leader who has significantly contributed to environmental sustainability in British Columbia as a direct result of their voluntary local or regional initiatives and their environmental activism.
“This is a great opportunity for people to honour their unsung environmental heroes” says Patricia Chew, Executive Director of West Coast. “By posting the nomination form on our website, we hope to hear from every corner of the province”. The criteria for nominees and the nomination form can be found at www.wcel.org/resources/ataward/nominate The award is open only to individuals. We encourage those who previously nominated candidates to try again.
The nomination process closes October 27th with the short list to be announced November 9th. The winners of this year’s awards will be announced at a gala event on November 30th.
West Coast Environmental Law is a registered non-profit organization. Through legal research, analysis and education, it has been championing British Columbians’ rights to a healthy environment for more than 30 years.
