The Nunavut Planning Commission (NPC) invites applications for the positions of Policy Specialist (2) and Geographic Information Systems Analyst (2). These 5-year terms, with an option to renew, will be based in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.

Policy Specialist:
Under the supervision of the Director, Policy Development the incumbent is responsible for the preparation of a single regional land use plan for Nunavut. Working in Canada’s sensitive and changing Arctic environment the incumbent, as part of a professional team, will advance a community based planning process where challenges include balancing the land use interests of Inuit, other northerners, government(s), environmental groups, multi-nationals and all Canadians. The interdisciplinary incumbent will play a lead role in plan development, training and promoting the planning process.

GIS Analyst: Under the supervision of the Director, Informatics and Communications, the incumbent, working in a leading edge IT environment, develops, maintains, and manages digital datasets and paper maps required for land use planning decisions in Nunavut. As part of a dynamic team the incumbent advises on information requirements and leads the creation of models and geographic analysis required to support land use plan development, implementation and monitoring. Challenges include training, promoting GIS and ensuring the NPC remains a leader and trend setter in GIS within Nunavut and throughout Canada.

Requirements: The ideal applicants will be team players and goal oriented. These positions require excellent analytical, organizational, communication and advanced technical skills. Education requirements include a post secondary degree in Geography, Land Use Planning, Environmental Sciences/Studies, or Natural Resources. GIS Analyst applicants must also hold a certificate or diploma in Geographic Information Systems Technology. Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered. Previous work involving a cross-cultural mentorship role would be an asset. Priority consideration will be given to qualified applicants who are beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and to individuals who are fluent in English and Inuktitut or Inuinnaqtun.

Salary: Commensurate with education, experience and position.
