- Closing date: Friday, 6 October 2006
GIS/Spatial Data Analysis is currently taught in second, third and fourth (Honours and Graduate Diploma) years and is integrated through project work with teaching in various aspects of human and physical geography, urban and regional planning and environmental and earth science. There are well equipped GIS laboratories, using mainly ESRI and ER Mapper software and support staff located in the School. Students from many disciplines across the University are attracted to these courses. An active research programme in GIS already exists within the School, with linkages in areas such as population health and marine and terrestrial ecology, supporting a number of PhD students as well as postdoctoral staff. This appointment will strengthen and expand the GIS undergraduate, postgraduate and research programme, with an emphasis on human geography and/or human environment interactions. Potential research opportunities exist for this position within health, commerce and human geography, including Institute for Regional Development (IRD), located within the School. The University has a policy which allows academics on fixed-term contracts to apply for promotion which may lead to tenure.
The School is a unique combination of expertise spanning physical, chemical and biological aspects of the environment as well as the impact of human activities on that environment: from deep rocks to regolith and soil surface to landscape processes, marine and environmental science to an understanding of the nature and function of past and present environments. The School emphasises an integrated global perspective on issues posed by the earth and its environment.
The appointee will contribute to the University’s teaching capacity in GIS, undertake research in spatial data analysis, generate increased undergraduate and postgraduate enrolment and develop collaborative relationships with industry and the community. Applicants must have a PhD applying GIS in geography or related discipline, such as urban and regional planning or environmental management. Applicants with teaching experience are requested to submit a teaching portfolio as part of their application. For further information regarding the position please contact Dr Kimberley Van Niel on +61 08 6488 2707 or email kimberly.vanniel@uwa.edu.au.
