Job Description:
The Galiano Conservancy Association has an exciting, ongoing full-time employment opportunity for an individual with a passion for conservation and ecological restoration. We are looking for someone to join our restoration team on beautiful Galiano Island. The position spans our forest, riparian, aquatic and grassland ecosystem restoration on Galiano Island as well as private land stewardship and baseline mapping projects. The successful candidate will partake in all areas of our restoration work including producing restoration prescriptions, implementing designs and monitoring projects through data collection and management. Particular emphasis will be on implementing our unique, hand operated, forest restoration project now in its 5th year. The candidate must be comfortable working and communicating with private landowners, volunteers and public groups. We are looking for an individual able to work in a team environment as well as be responsible in a supervisory role. Much of the field work can be physically challenging and the ideal candidate must be willing to work outdoors under all weather conditions.
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in the field of Environmental Science, Ecological Restoration, Ecology, Biology, Forestry or other related field.
- Physically fit.
- Experience or training in biological inventory and standard forest surveys.
- Experience working as part of a team and ability to organize and carry out tasks as an individual.
- Experience in ecological assessment and planning restoration treatments.
The following skills and qualifications are considered strong assets:
- Familiarity with local flora and fauna.
- Experience organizing and working with volunteers.
- Experience working as a group leader with responsibility for co-workers (summer students, student interns).
- Landowner contact.
- Research skills.
- Experience providing environmental education for youth.
- Experience using GIS (ArcView), photo interpretation and ground-truthing.
- Project management and coordination.
- Grant writing and reporting.
- Computer skills.
The successful candidate will work on the following projects and will share responsibility for carrying out the listed duties. The approximate time commitment for each project is in parentheses.
Forest Restoration (60%)
Control of Invasive Exotic Species (20%)
Native Plant Nursery (10%)
Stewardship of Private Land (5%)
Stream and Riparian Restoration and Enhancement (5%)
