Background

The Haida Heritage and Forest Guardians require a full-time technical support specialist and systems administrator with GIS and web server experience. This person will work with all Departments of the Haida Heritage and Forest Guardians. Services will be eventually expanded eventually to meet the needs of all Haida Tribal Society Offices.

Responsibilities

  • Establish, manage and maintain system/network administration with a new server
  • Manage and maintain about 18 windows 2000/XP workstations and laptops
  • Plan for future information systems needs based on the current state of technology and available and/or prospective funding.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science from an accredited college or university OR comparable technical certification including both Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) and CompTIA, A Plus hardware certificate plus relevant experience
  • Minimum five years of practical, service-orientated experience in information technology (IT),  providing assistance to users on general computer hardware, operating system, and software problems
  • Minimum of two years recent experience as a Windows NT/2000/2003 System Administrator with a strong emphasis on GIS and web sites
  • Experience with complete hardware assembly, software installation and network creation, upgrading, testing, and maintaining
  • Experience maintaining and configuring operating systems such as Windows XP, as well as special programs such as printer and plotter drivers, GPS receivers, and PDAs
    Experience with system administration tools and processes such as adding or removing user accounts, using backup programs and maintaining system files (groups, hosts, aliases)
  • Experience with office email, internet connections, FTP, and web sites and experience with the operation and configuration of network devices, including routers, switches, firewalls, intrusion detection devices, remote access servers, especially TCP/IP
  • Experience with ESRI software administration requirements, including ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcInfo, and related extensions, as well as their licence managers, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills – written, verbal, and graphic – and posses an ability to understand, interpret, and convey technical and non-technical information.
    Administer and manage IT work and equipment including budget tracking, proposal writing, report writing, etc.
  • Valid Drivers Licence and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Be physically able to move and setup IT equipment weighing up to 65 pounds (30 kg.)

Preference will be given to applicants of Haida Ancestry. The successful candidate will be committed to assuming the roles and responsibilities of becoming an integral part of the Haida Heritage and Forest Guardians. Characteristics of such a person include being self-motivated, having excellent time management and organizational skills, and the ability to work with minimal direction and support. A criminal records check will be required prior to hiring.

This position is full-time, with most work occurring Monday to Friday, 8:30 – 4:30 p.m. at the Haida Heritage and Forest Guardians Office, 1563 Main St. in Massett, Haida Gwaii. Evening and weekend work will be required depending on maintenance needs and emergency requirements. Flexibility with the applicant’s schedule will be required. Salary will be commensurate with training and experience.
