Background
Geographic Information System (GIS) is a powerful tool for managing spatial data, from data collection to analysis to map production. Haida Mapping supports the initiatives of Council of Haida Nation through the work of Haida Tribal Society’s Haida Heritage and Forest Guardians Program.
The Haida Mappingdepartment is looking for a suitable candidate to be employed by theHaida Tribal Society to work as a GIS Technician Trainee. Preferencewill be given to persons of Haida ancestry.
Responsibilities
- Work with the Haida Mapping Coordinator and other GIS Technicians as well as coworkers in other departments of the Haida Heritage and Forest Guardians office in Masset.
- Receive extensive technical training in GIS, mapping, database management, and general office practices.
- Help create GIS-based mapping products for analysis, education, and display.
- Help with GIS and related data management including data entry, downloading, processing, writing metadata, and filing.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of resource management issues on Haida Gwaii, especially land use planning, heritage and forestry resource management, and fisheries
- Knowledge of MS Windows-based computers and MS Office software, especially Access databases
- Ability to problem-solve and to balance and prioritize competing needs so that the work of the program is carried out in an effective manner
- Ability to work both independently and as a team player
- Knowledge of provincial forestry and heritage resource management, land use planning, and fisheries data sets would be an asset
- Experience creating or using maps with ArcGIS software would be an asset.
- Experience with field survey work, including GPS and data collection would be an asset.
The successful candidate will be committed to assuming the roles and responsibilities of becoming an integral part of the Haida Mapping department and assisting with the work of Haida Heritage and Forest Guardians. The characteristics of such a person include being self-motivated, and highly interested in the mandate of Council of the Haida Nation and the very important cultural, resource, and legal concerns that are part of this work.
This position is full-time, Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.at the Haida Heritage and Forest Guardians Office, 1563 Main St. in Massett across from Delmas Co-op.
