Tourism, Parks, Recreation & Culture , Edmonton – Reporting to the Manager of Aboriginal Consultation, the Aboriginal Place Names Consultation Officer will be responsible to establish a framework and plan of action for an Aboriginal Place Names initiative in Alberta. You will work directly with First Nations communities on the results of Traditional Use Studies to encourage the sharing and use of Aboriginal places names data in Geographic Names Program data inventories. Your work will involve assisting First Nation community representatives in developing Aboriginal Place Names materials suitable for curriculum and other public uses identified as priorities by the community. You will also make recommendations concerning statutory decisions as to whether First Nations consultation should be required for development projects under the Historical Resources Act, be directly involved in the negotiation of Traditional Use Data Sharing Agreements, and resolve potential land use conflicts between development activities and First Nations traditional uses.
Qualifications: Post-secondary degree in anthropology, linguistics, history, cultural geography or related fields with a bearing on Traditional Use Studies or place names initiatives is required. Several years of related work experience is also required. The individual should be familiar with provincial regulatory processes concerning natural resource development(particularly those involving cultural and historical resources) and official place naming. Training or practical experience in consultation processes, strong interpersonal skills, and the capacity to work in team environments are essential. Equivalencies will be considered.Capacity with one of the principal First Nation languages in Alberta and Geographic Information System applications would be assets for this position. The successful applicant must be licensed to drive passenger vehicles.
Note: Final candidates for this position will be asked to undergo a security screening. Candidates with lesser qualifications will be considered at a lower classification and salary.
Salary: $56,832 TO $74,496 Closing Date: May 4, 2007.
